Cosmos
Cosmos is an attempted realization of a number of important aesthetic concepts for me
as a composer: the unification of the micro and macro dimensions of sound (wave motion being common to both);
an assimilation of influence from non-Western musics; and the desire to produce music in harmony with nature.
It is also the first composition conceived for and produced by my electronic music performance system,
MIDI_Sculptor – a system that incorporates the Max Mathews Radio Baton as a musical controller in conjuntion
with my own purpose-built software, plus a range of hardware devices.
Cosmos was my graduation submission for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts from
Stanford University. This recording is an excerpt from the live performance I gave at the university's annual
outdoor computer music concert, Digital Music Under the Stars, on July 24, 1997.
